Do letters of recommendation need to be submitted with the Common App?
You only need to submit one letter of recommendation. If you do not submit the letter of recommendation, you will be reviewed on academic merit only.
Should you waive your right to see your letters of recommendation?
No, you don’t have to waive your right to view recommendations. However, while you don’t have to waive this right, some people you request a letter from may not feel comfortable agreeing to write a letter knowing you may have access to it later.
Can students see recommendation letters on Common App?
Waiver of Access (FERPA) on the Common Application Waiving your right lets colleges know that you will never try to read your recommendations. That in turn reassures colleges that your recommenders have provided support that is candid and truthful.
Do letters of recommendation need to be submitted by the deadline?
Recommenders are strongly encouraged to submit their letters by the deadline, but will still be able to submit after the posted date. The application deadline is provided to recommenders in the Letter of Recommendation Request email.
How do I know if my teacher submitted a recommendation on Common App?
Application Statuses To help you keep track of your application and all materials, click Check Status at the top of the application dashboard. Recommendations are immediately updated once received from your recommender.
Can you submit your Common App before counselor recommendation?
You are allowed to submit your application before your counselor or teachers submit their school forms whether they choose to do so online or on paper. The Common Application system allows recommendations to be submitted even after the application has been submitted.
Are you allowed to read your letters of recommendation?
Some recommenders have no problem showing students the letter of rec they wrote and will show or email you the letter before sending or sealing it, which is fine. It’s off the record, so sign the FERPA Waiver from the college. If they offer, there’s not much harm to reading it.
What does it mean to waive my right of access to this recommendation?
If you waive this right, that means you agree that you will not be allowed access to this particular item (the letter of reference) in your record.
What if my teacher recommendations are late Common App?
If this is you, don’t worry. It’s not your problem anymore. The Common App knows that these things are out of your control — what’s more, they don’t penalize you for any of it. All you’re responsible for by the application deadline (for your recs section) is your recommenders’ names and their contact information.

Can I submit my application through the Common App before recommendation letters?
Keep in mind, you can submit your application through The Common App before your recommenders submit their letters. That means you can’t use your teachers’ potential procrastination as an excuse for your own.
How do I create a recommender account on the Common App?
The first-year Common App for recommenders has extra tools to track student progress on the Common App. To create a recommender account an applicant must first invite you as a recommender. Note: An applicant can invite you as more than one recommender, e.g. Teacher and Other Recommender.
How do I apply to college with the Common App?
If you are applying to college for the first time you’ll select the “First Year Student” button. Provide your login credentials. Make sure you use an email address you check often. This is the email the Common App and colleges will use to get in touch with you.
